Preventative Dental Procedures are a necessary way to care for your teeth and keep them healthy, avoiding issues such as cavities, gum disease, enamel wear and more. Learn how NuSmyle Dental can help you maintain great oral health.
Regular cleanings, also called a prophy (prophylaxis) for short, are usually performed in six-month intervals. They help maintain healthy gum tissue and catch any problems before they develop into bigger ones. The hygienist will perform an oral cancer exam and will also look for any problems that can be brought to the attention of Dr. Hurst.
Dr. Hurst has a brand new, three-dimensional scanner which allows him to take scans of all the areas of the jaws, sinuses and airway. This helps identify infections, root aberrations, constricted airways and other problems. Scans can also be made to fabricate surgical guides for implant placement. This ensures the precise placement of implants.
Dr. Hurst will perform a thorough exam of all teeth, gums, and associated structures. He uses a laser cavity detector, which is another tool in finding decay before it becomes deep. He will also study the x-rays and document any forming decay, as well as recommend any treatment on teeth where the decay or other problems need to be addressed. Using an intraoral camera, Dr. Hurst sees the problems up close and will educate you as the patient. Dr. Hurst's philosophy is to be proactive and treat problems when they begin, not when they are advanced.
Fluoride varnish is recommended to both young and old at regular intervals. Fluoride will harden the teeth roots to slow down any decay on natural teeth and around restorations.
Periodontal maintenance is performed for any individuals with gum and bone conditions that need more intensive care than a cleaning (prophy) would provide. Root cleaning and antibiotic therapy are often performed at these visits.
Dr. Hurst uses state-of-the-art digital x-ray sensors and columnated x-ray heads. This allows the x-ray to only expose a small area, limiting any scatter, and also allowing the use of lower doses in taking these two-dimensional pictures.
