A dental extraction refers to the removal of a tooth from the gum socket. The procedure is performed under anesthesia and normally individuals will return to regular activities the next day.

Dr. Hurst has removed thousands of wisdom teeth and performed many other complicated extractions. He takes his time and does not rush to get done so as to achieve the best result. All patients receive local anesthetic. Most cases are done on nitrous oxide and/or oral sedation. This provides comfort and relaxation to the patient. Special gauze packs are placed in the surgery sites to prevent dry sockets. Steroids are also used to minimize swelling. Most patients experience minimal pain and swelling. Medication can be prescribed for any discomfort.

Reasons to Extract Teeth

Impactions

Most of the time, wisdom teeth do not erupt into position because there is not enough room for them. Removing them will eliminate future problems with decay, infection & pain.

Decay

Some teeth cannot be saved with root canals and have to be removed. Most of the time the site can be bone grafted and an implant or bridge be placed to restore the area to full function.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss. By treating this disease early on, most teeth can be saved but sometimes extraction is the only good option.
